This course is important for anyone involved in the development of community employment for individuals with disabilities. Customized Employment used proven strategies to circumvent the traditional means of finding wage jobs. Under comparative and competitive systems, people with disabilities are screened out. This course teaches essential skills in how to develop a solid vocational profile using the Discovery process, how to determine the proper conditions of employment that will lead to individual success, and how to develop meaningful work, provide worksite supports, and leverage funding. This course is now required in various states in order to certify staff and employment service providers.
Customized Community Careers Part 1: An Overview of Customized Employment
This course is the first of a five-course series called Creating Community Careers. This first course is an introduction to customized employment. It shows how customized employment addresses the challenges of high unemployment rates. This is especially helpful for people with disabilities, as their opportunities for employment have been limited by segregation.
Customized Community Careers Part 2: Discovering Personal Genius Process
This course is designed to introduce Discovering Personal Genius, or DPG, and some of the tools that are used to create a Discovery profile for a job seeker. It is not intended to teach how to facilitate DPG, instead it explains how direct support professionals can support Discovery. Customized Community Careers Part 3: Customized Job Development
This course is designed to introduce customized job development. It focuses on some of the methods that are used to discover potential job opportunities with community businesses. It is not intended to teach how to do customized job development, however it explains how direct support professionals can support customized job development. Customized Community Careers Part 4: Using Interest-Based Negotiation
This course introduces interest-based negotiation. It also covers some of the strategies used to find, explore, and create potential job opportunities with community businesses. This course is not intended to teach how to conduct interest-based negotiations. Instead, it is intended to teach you how to use interest-based negotiation once you have mastered the basic skills. Customized Community Careers Part 5: Job Training
This course provides an overview of Consultative Employment Training and Support, or CETS . It introduces effective strategies to teach new employees job-related skills and routines and build natural supports. It is not intended to teach how to provide CETS , instead it explains how direct support professionals can support someone who is receving CETS.
